Discover the unique charm of the Heirloom Squash ‘Marina di Chioggia’, a ‘sea pumpkin’ originating from the Italian coast. This variety is celebrated for its striking, turban-shaped fruits, which boast a deep blue-green exterior and a delightfully sweet, vibrant yellow-orange flesh. Each substantial fruit can weigh up to 5kg, making it a rewarding choice for those seeking impressive harvests from their vegetable patch. How to Grow: – Sow seeds indoors from April to early June in a propagator or pots kept at 20-25°C, using moist, high-quality compost. Cover seeds with 19mm of compost. Germination typically takes 5-8 days. – Harden off seedlings and transplant outdoors after the last frost, ensuring a spacing of 90cm between plants. – Alternatively, sow seeds directly outdoors from late May. Plant two seeds per station and thin to the strongest seedling once established. – For optimal growth, provide full sun, fertile soil, and consistent watering. Mulching will help retain soil moisture. – Expect cropping to begin approximately 18 weeks after sowing. – Vigorous trailing vines can produce up to 5 large fruits per plant with good cultivation. Aftercare: Maintain well-drained soil and water regularly, especially during dry periods. Support the vigorous vines as they grow if necessary. Regularly inspect plants for pests and remove any affected foliage promptly. Harvest fruits when they reach their full size and the skin has hardened.
